Tips for Traveling Healthier

If you’ve ever felt less-than-stellar while you’re traveling, you know how unpleasant it can be. Here is a list of some tips to aid in keeping yourself healthy while taking a getaway.

  1. Before you go: Strengthen your immune system. It’s a good idea to try to make your immune system its strongest before traveling by taking supplements to prevent cold and flu. Supplements haven’t been medically proven to work, but if they’ve warded off a cold for you in the past, it isn’t a bad idea to take them. Many frequent travelers swear by probiotics, which are excellent for your digestive system.

  1. Bring dried gingerroot. Dried gingerroot is good for combatting seasickness, especially on a cruise. Experts say to take 1,000 milligrams of dried gingerroot (which you can find in health food stores) before setting sail. If needed, take more four hours later.

  1. Eat some yogurt. Ensure you have a healthy balance of intestinal flora to fight and fend off invading bacteria from the new food and environment you’re in. Plus, yogurt is a great source of protein with a little fat that’ll keep you going throughout the day.

  1. Wear glasses instead of contacts as much as possible. As a contact wearer, this is easier said than done, I know. But try wearing your glasses for as much of the trip as you can. Contacts tend to dry out your eyes and make them more vulnerable to microbial invaders. Plus, if you’re wearing your glasses, you’ll be less likely to touch your eyes, lessening the potential for bacteria to find its way into your eyes.

  1. Sanitize! Get a sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol – it will kill the most germs on contact. Use it to clean hands after touching a lot of things in a public place (airport, cab, store, etc.) or to clean surfaces at your hotel.

  1. Hydrate! While traveling, it’s hard to remember to stay hydrated, especially when you’re having a good time. Watch out for hot and dry climates as well as if you’re participating in any kind of sports or athletic activity. Don’t forget that alcohol can dehydrate you as well, so be sure to have a glass or two of water before bed if you’ve been out on the town and partook in a few cocktails.

  1. Get some rest. Although this tip seems simple, many of us forget how exhausting traveling can really be. Walking through the airport. Wrangling the kids to get them in the car. The traffic jam on the way to your destination. All of these situations can wear a person down. So, take a nap! There’s nothing shameful about taking a little nap when you get to your hotel or catching a few z’s poolside. It’s better to rest a little when you need it than becoming exhausted or cranky while you’re out and about somewhere!
