Autumn in Cozumel is race time. And for visitors to this Mexican island, it is a unique opportunity to take part in a pair of endurance events – or just observe the day-long displays of athletic excellence.
First up is the Cozumel ITU Triathlon World Cup. Begun in 2013, this race is considered a “sprint” in triathlon circles, as the distances are relatively short, compared to Ironman competitions. In this endeavor, entrants start out with a 750m (half a mile) swim, then jump on their bikes for a 20K (12.4 miles) ride before finishing with a 5K (3.1 miles) run. Hosted the ITU (International Triathlon Union), this event takes place October 2-4. Friday and Saturday are when the athletes get familiar with the course, with the race itself on Sunday.
Following that warm-up, athletes and race fans can gear themselves up for Ironman Cozumel – the second most popular Ironman race on the competitive circuit, and an important qualifying event for the World Ironman 2016 event. The race starts at Chankanaab Park with a 2.4-mile ocean swim, which is followed by a 112-mile bike ride, and concludes with a 26.2-mile run. The race will be held on November 29, with awards presented the following day. To get a personal idea of the Ironman Cozumel experience, check out the video below.
